Steven Gerrard Selects Michael Olise as Mohamed Salah's Successor at Liverpool
Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard has publicly endorsed Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise as the prime candidate to fill the void left by Mohamed Salah's impending departure. The Egyptian forward confirmed his exit from Anfield this summer, sparking intense speculation about his replacement.
Gerrard's Transfer Recommendation and Recruitment Confidence
Speaking to talkSPORT, Gerrard acknowledged the monumental challenge of directly replacing Salah's goal contributions but suggested Olise possesses the requisite quality. "The concern if you're trying to replace Salah, like-for-like, there's very few out there," Gerrard stated. "Olise would be one but I don't think he'd be available."
The former Liverpool captain expressed unwavering faith in the club's recruitment strategy, highlighting their historical success in transitioning after losing key players. He referenced past replacements such as Luis Diaz for Sadio Mane, noting Liverpool often opts for different stylistic profiles rather than identical replicas.
"Liverpool have a fantastic record of replacing top players so I've got every confidence from a recruitment point of view that they'll have different options," Gerrard emphasized. "They'll have to replace his goal involvements which is extremely difficult because he's been incredible for Liverpool for many years."
Bayern Munich's Stance on Michael Olise's Future
Despite Gerrard's endorsement, securing Olise appears challenging. Bayern Munich's sporting director Max Eberl recently affirmed the club's relaxed position regarding the French international's future. In an interview with SportBILD, Eberl declared, "It doesn’t matter which club is interested in him: anyone who plays for FC Bayern knows what they have here. Michael has a contract with us until 2029, with no release clause; we’re calm."
Olise, 24, joined Bayern from Crystal Palace last summer and has since impressed in the Bundesliga, making him a coveted asset for the German giants.
Dominik Szoboszlai Reveals Private Discussions with Mohamed Salah
Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has disclosed intimate conversations with Mohamed Salah prior to the winger's announcement about leaving the club. Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Szoboszlai described Salah as both a close friend and a professional mentor.
"To be honest, maybe you know, I am very close with Mo," Szoboszlai revealed. "We had a lot of talks about what is going to happen in the future and it is his own decision. He is a grown man, it’s his own decision. He knows what to do."
The Hungarian international praised Salah's legacy, asserting, "The numbers speak for themselves, the stuff he has done on the pitch speaks for itself and he is one of the best that has ever played. That is not only for Liverpool, I think the world as well and I am happy I was lucky to play with him."
Szoboszlai further highlighted Salah's exemplary conduct and influence within the squad, noting, "He is every day in training being a good example for all of us. For the new guys, the old guys, everyone. He shows us about being a better player and a better human, so he has had a big impact on his career."
Liverpool's Current Challenges and Champions League Focus
This news emerges amidst a turbulent period for Liverpool, who suffered a demoralizing 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals last Saturday. With their Premier League top-four aspirations faltering, the Champions League remains their sole opportunity for silverware this season.
The Reds face a critical first-leg encounter against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday evening. Manager Arne Slot's side must navigate this high-stakes fixture while contending with off-pitch issues, including planned supporter protests over escalating ticket prices.
As the summer transfer window approaches, Liverpool's recruitment team will undoubtedly be evaluating multiple options to compensate for Salah's departure, with Gerrard's endorsement of Olise adding significant weight to the ongoing speculation.
