Steven Gerrard Pinpoints Fulham Fixture as Decisive for Arne Slot's Liverpool Reign
Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard has voiced his support for manager Arne Slot, while emphasising that the upcoming Premier League clash against Fulham could be a defining moment in the Dutch coach's tenure at Anfield. The 45-year-old former captain believes a victory over the Cottagers is essential to maintain pressure on rivals in the race for a top-four finish.
Critical Week Ahead for Rattled Reds
Gerrard's comments come amid a challenging period for Liverpool, who suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup. The Reds now face a stern test against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, followed by the crucial league encounter with Fulham on April 14. Defender Virgil van Dijk has openly admitted the team "gave up" in their recent loss, highlighting the need for a swift turnaround.
In an interview with talkSPORT, Gerrard stressed the importance of securing Champions League football next season, stating: "The players have admitted it, the manager has, it's not good enough. It's a huge week, they've got to stand up and be counted, stick together and grasp the opportunity to put pressure on Aston Villa and Manchester United against Fulham, which is arguably as important."
Gerrard's Warning and Support for Slot
Gerrard expressed concern that if Liverpool fail to beat Fulham and also suffer a damaging defeat to PSG, the pressure on Slot could intensify significantly. He warned: "If the ownership sees that gap to Villa or United stretch, I worry for the manager's position. I don't want to see it happen, I'm a huge fan, I was blown away by his first season, he's a good man, a very good coach after what he's done."
The former midfielder reiterated his belief in Slot's abilities but pointed to the Fulham game as the key to stabilising the situation. "The key to the situation is the Fulham game," he said. "If he can put more heat on Villa and United and stay in the PSG game, everything will be fine and in a better place in six days' time. If this was to get worse, I'd be worried for the manager, I must say."
Premier League Standings and Stakes
Liverpool currently sit in fifth place, five points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa and six points adrift of Manchester United. They hold a narrow advantage over Chelsea, Brentford, and Everton, who are all closely trailing. Fulham, managed by Marco Silva, trail the Reds by five points, and a victory at Anfield could reignite their own European ambitions.
The late kick-off on Saturday offers Liverpool a chance to close the gap on their Champions League rivals while distancing themselves from the chasing pack. Other fixtures this weekend include Aston Villa's trip to relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest, Chelsea hosting Manchester City, and Manchester United facing Leeds United.
Gerrard concluded by emphasising the need for unity and effort, urging the team to "galvanise the season" and avoid further setbacks that could jeopardise Slot's position and the club's aspirations.
