Enzo Fernandez has reshared a social media post after appearing to mock England supporters by using the Oasis song 'Wonderwall' following Argentina's World Cup semi-final victory. The Chelsea midfielder scored the equaliser in the 85th minute of Wednesday night's match, his second goal of the tournament, as Argentina defeated England to reach the final.
Celebration and social media post
During the match at the Atlanta Stadium, Fernandez celebrated his goal by cupping his ears and mimicking people talking, though it was unclear if this was aimed at England fans. After the game, he shared an Instagram story featuring himself alongside Lionel Messi and Leandro Paredes, all laughing, with the Oasis song 'Wonderwall' as the soundtrack. The song has become synonymous with England's World Cup campaign, as the squad has sung it with fans after matches in North America.
U-turn and Chelsea backlash
Following online backlash, Fernandez reshared the post without the 'Wonderwall' reference. His club Chelsea also faced criticism for a post on X congratulating Fernandez on reaching back-to-back World Cup finals, which was later deleted after fan backlash. Fernandez is expected to start for Argentina against Spain in the World Cup final on Sunday, as Argentina aims to become the third nation to retain the trophy after Italy and Brazil.
