Exeter City ask Man City for six-figure FA Cup gate receipt share
Exeter ask Man City for FA Cup financial support

In an unusual move highlighting the financial gulf in English football, Exeter City have formally asked Manchester City to share a portion of their earnings from this weekend's FA Cup third-round tie.

A Financial Plea to Premier League Giants

The League One side, owned by a supporters' trust, has written to the Premier League champions ahead of Saturday's match at the Etihad Stadium. While both clubs are due to receive a standard 45% share of the gate receipts—estimated to be worth between £250,000 and £400,000—Exeter have requested additional voluntary support.

The club stated the request was made "in recognition of the financial realities of our supporter-ownership model." This appeal follows further strain from an accidental fire at Exeter's St James Park stadium in November, which caused an estimated £100,000 of damage to temporary structures housing medical and control facilities.

Cup Clash Amidst Divergent Campaigns

On the pitch, the tie is a classic David vs Goliath encounter. Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, currently second in the Premier League and five points behind Arsenal, are heavy favourites. Guardiola will be aiming to secure a third FA Cup triumph, having previously won the competition in 2019 and 2023.

Exeter, managed by Gary Caldwell, sit 14th in League One with a record of nine wins, three draws, and twelve defeats this season. Their focus will temporarily shift from league duties to a monumental cup challenge at the home of the European champions.

Broader Context and City's Busy Schedule

The financial request underscores the ongoing challenges faced by clubs in the lower leagues, even when they secure lucrative cup draws against elite opposition. For Manchester City, the FA Cup fixture is part of a packed January schedule.

The team faces Newcastle United in the League Cup semi-finals on Tuesday, before a crucial Premier League derby against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday, 17 January. How Guardiola's side manages this period could be pivotal in their pursuit of multiple trophies this season.
