Abdi Nageeye of the Netherlands and Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya secured their first world major titles at the 2024 New York City Marathon, prevailing in the final stages of the race. Nageeye, 35, finished in 2:07:39, just six seconds ahead of 2022 champion Evans Chebet. Chepkirui, 33, crossed the line in 2:24:35, with defending champion Hellen Obiri finishing second and Vivian Cheruiyot third, making an all-Kenyan podium.
Nageeye, who withdrew from the Olympic marathon in Paris due to a hip injury, described the victory as revenge. “I was out for revenge,” he said. “Every day during training I thought about Paris, but I was doing my training at 110%.” Chepkirui said the final turn was tough, but she pushed to the finish.
The elite field included many athletes returning from the Olympics, such as Paris champion Tamirat Tola, who finished fourth. The men’s course record set by Tola in 2023 and the women’s record from 2003 remain unbroken. In the wheelchair races, Americans Daniel Romanchuk and Susannah Scaroni won, ending Marcel Hug’s 16-race winning streak.
