England's third-place play-off against France at the FIFA World Cup 2026 in Miami could be delayed or suspended due to thunderstorms forecast near kick-off. The match is scheduled for Saturday at 10pm UK time at the Miami Stadium, which lacks a fully retractable roof, leaving it vulnerable to weather disruptions.
Thunderstorm threat and FIFA regulations
According to the BBC weather outlook, thundery showers and a moderate breeze are predicted between three and five hours before the match. Under FIFA regulations, play must be halted or postponed if there is lightning within eight miles of the venue, and can only restart 30 minutes after the last strike. This has already caused disruptions earlier in the tournament: England's round of 16 clash against Mexico was delayed by an hour due to thunderstorms in Mexico City, while France's group stage game against Iran was temporarily suspended for severe rain and lightning.
England's World Cup history and Tuchel's challenge
England can achieve their finest World Cup result since 1966 with a victory over France, having lost both previous third-place matches against Italy in 1990 and Belgium in 2018. However, under-pressure manager Thomas Tuchel may find it challenging to motivate his squad after a devastating semi-final loss to Argentina. Speaking after that defeat, Tuchel said: "None of our players and none of the French players want to play this match. They want to play the final. We gave everything to achieve that." He added: "We have one less day of recovery than France, but we will do it with professionalism. Reaching the semi-finals is already an achievement in itself, of course."
Match context and potential changes
Both teams were favourites to reach the final, but England lost to Argentina and France were beaten by Spain. The third-place play-off is often seen as a consolation prize, and Tuchel acknowledged the difficulty: "Everyone plays to win the World Cup, but that's how it is. We'll have to wait four years before participating in another World Cup." The weather forecast could add further uncertainty, with the match potentially being rescheduled or suspended if conditions worsen.
