England's Under-15 World Cup match against the Republic of Ireland was abandoned following an allegation of racist abuse involving a Republic of Ireland player. The incident occurred during Monday's clash in Azerbaijan, following an altercation between players from both teams.
Incident and Walk-Off
An England player was seen approaching the touchline to report the alleged incident to his coaching staff, who subsequently raised the complaint with the referee. England's coaching staff then instructed their players to leave the pitch, with the Republic of Ireland leading 4-1 heading into the final minute of the match.
England head coach Matt Thorpe was seen calling the referee over before instructing his players to leave the pitch. Thorpe was reportedly told by the official that he 'could not hear.' One of Thorpe's assistant coaches was then heard telling the referee 'we are reporting racism' before adding 'we do not want to play.'
FIFA Investigation
FIFA have since confirmed they are investigating the incident and gathering reports to establish the circumstances surrounding the allegation. A spokesperson said: "Fifa is aware of an incident at the U-15 World Cup and Festival match between England and the Republic of Ireland."
"The match was abandoned by the referee following England's refusal to continue. The official reports are being gathered, and the matter will be referred to the independent disciplinary committee, who will decide in due course."
More updates on this developing story are expected as FIFA continues its investigation.
