England Fans at Manchester Fanzone for World Cup Opener

Thousands of football fans have gathered at Manchester's biggest fanzone tonight for England's first game at the 2026 World Cup. The Three Lions are taking on Croatia in Dallas, Texas, in their first group game in the newly expanded tournament being held in the USA, Mexico and Canada.

More than 2,000 people have packed into Freight Island, opposite Piccadilly Station, for the 'We are Football festival' which claims to be the biggest fanzone of its kind in Europe. Fans decked out in England shirts and draped in St George's flags began gathering from the afternoon as the anticipation built.

There were jubilant scenes as Harry Kane gave England a 1-0 lead from the penalty spot. That joy was short-lived when Croatia leveled the score at 1-1 in the 36th minute. Kane restored England's lead in the 42nd minute, but Croatia levelled again on the stroke of half-time - with England scoring again early in the second half.

The atmosphere at Freight Island was electric, with supporters cheering every tackle and pass. The fanzone, which boasts a massive screen and plenty of food and drink options, has been a popular spot for fans unable to travel to the United States for the tournament.

England's opening match against Croatia is a crucial test for Gareth Southgate's side as they look to go one better than their runners-up finish in the last World Cup. The Three Lions are aiming to win their first World Cup since 1966, and fans are optimistic after a strong qualifying campaign.

With the match still ongoing, supporters are hoping for a positive result to start their World Cup journey. The fanzone will remain open for all of England's group stage matches, with thousands expected to attend each game.
