Unai Emery Explains Two Key Reasons for Harvey Elliott's Limited Villa Role
Emery reveals why Elliott has limited Villa game time

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has publicly outlined the primary reasons for Harvey Elliott's limited involvement in the first team since his deadline-day loan move from Liverpool.

The Two Factors Limiting Elliott's Pitch Time

Elliott has made just five appearances for Villa, with his game time severely restricted. Emery confirmed that two main issues are at play: the outstanding form of Emi Buendia in the number ten role and the fact that Elliott himself requires an extended adaptation period to settle at the club.

The situation is further complicated by a significant clause in the loan agreement. The deal stipulates that Aston Villa must pay Liverpool £35 million to make the transfer permanent if the 22-year-old midfielder makes just five more appearances for the club.

Buendia's Remarkable Resurgence

Emery shed light on the dramatic turnaround of Emi Buendia, a player many expected to leave the club last summer. The Argentine playmaker has been in exceptional form, registering six goal contributions this campaign with goals against Fulham, Feyenoord, Tottenham, and Bournemouth.

"He had an injury for 10 months, and after he was training with us. He needed time to get in everything - good, mentally, physically confident," Emery explained, detailing Buendia's journey back to peak performance.

The manager highlighted Buendia's struggles last season and during a loan spell in Germany with Bayer Leverkusen, where he failed to regain his confidence or form. "This year is completely different," Emery stated. "He started so focused... showing in each match he played in pre-season."

Elliott's Current Situation and Future

Beyond Buendia's form, Emery stressed that Elliott's own need for time is a crucial factor. "The adaptation is something that some players need more than others," he noted, pointing out that the team's current demanding performance levels make immediate integration challenging.

Despite the limited minutes, Emery was full of praise for Elliott's attitude and work ethic. "Harvey Elliott, he is working very well. He is working consistently. He is a good guy and his commitment to Aston Villa is fantastic," the manager affirmed.

However, the reality of the competitive squad means Elliott faces a tough battle for playing time. "I am happy how he is doing his work here, but now it is difficult because he has other players playing and performing well, for example Emi Buendia and other players," Emery concluded, acknowledging the difficult selection decision he faces.
