Aston Villa's Europa League victory over Young Boys was overshadowed by crowd trouble after Donyell Malen was struck by an object thrown from the away end. The Dutch forward scored twice in the first half, but was left bleeding after being hit on the head by a cup during his goal celebrations.
The match was halted for over five minutes after Malen's second goal as Young Boys captain Loris Benito appealed to supporters to calm down. Fans clashed with police, with images showing punches thrown and riot gear deployed in the second half.
Young Boys manager Gerardo Seoane apologised for the incident but suggested Malen's celebrations were a 'small provocation'. 'It's not how we want to act when we are guests somewhere,' he said. 'I think nobody wins and everybody loses from this situation.'
Aston Villa boss Unai Emery confirmed Malen was 'OK' and called for respect from both sides. 'It is not necessary to get a moment like we had today,' he added.
Young Boys have a history of fan trouble, having been fined by Uefa for similar incidents at Manchester City and Celtic, and ordered to play a game behind closed doors last season.
