Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi has claimed forward Mason Greenwood paid a 'very high price' for the domestic abuse allegations that forced his departure from the Premier League.
The Background to Greenwood's Move
The 24-year-old footballer, who joined the Ligue 1 club from Manchester United last year in a £28million transfer, was initially arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of rape and assault. The Crown Prosecution Service subsequently dropped all charges the following year, citing the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that had come to light.
Following his exit from English football, Greenwood spent a season on loan at Spanish side Getafe before making his permanent move to Marseille. His form has been impressive, scoring 22 goals last season and already netting 11 times in 16 appearances during the current campaign.
De Zerbi's Strong Defence
Ahead of Marseille's Champions League encounter with Newcastle United, De Zerbi expressed his sadness at how Greenwood has been portrayed in England. 'He's a good guy, he paid a heavy price for what happened, a very heavy price,' stated the former Brighton manager.
De Zerbi emphasised the supportive environment Marseille has provided, saying: 'He has found the right environment for him. We have lent him a hand and given him affection. He's a little bit introverted but I know him and his family.'
The Italian coach added: 'It saddens me what happened in his life, because I know a totally different person than the one who was described in England.'
Teammate Support and England Prospects
Greenwood's Marseille colleague Angel Gomes also spoke in support of the forward at the Stade Velodrome. The England midfielder attributed Greenwood's positive form to the welcoming atmosphere at the French club.
'I think it's down to the environment that we have given him,' Gomes explained. 'He's loved by everyone. He's such a really nice guy who works very hard. I know him best because I've known him since I was young.'
Regarding Greenwood's international future, Gomes revealed they haven't discussed a potential England return, focusing instead on everyday topics. Greenwood, who has one senior England cap, has seen speculation about an international recall resurface given his current form.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe acknowledged the threat posed by Greenwood ahead of their European encounter, noting: 'He's a very good attacker from the wide right but they use him in a clever way. His most dangerous work is when he drifts infield.'
Howe added: 'He's not just a scorer, he's a creator and he's got a really good relationship with the players around him. We will have to defend well down that side of the pitch.'
