Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior has provided a significant update on the fitness of key players Cole Palmer and Reece James, confirming both were rested as a precaution ahead of a pivotal cup tie.
Precautionary Measures for Star Duo
The Blues secured a comfortable 5-1 victory over Charlton Athletic in the FA Cup third round at The Valley on Sunday, 11 January 2026. However, the match was notable for the absence of several first-team regulars.
Rosenior, overseeing his first game as permanent head coach after taking over from interim boss Calum McFarlane, made eight changes from the side that lost 2-1 to Fulham. Crucially, he also omitted Cole Palmer, Reece James, and Malo Gusto from the matchday squad entirely.
Explaining the decision post-match, Rosenior stated the trio were left out due to minor issues. "Malo, Cole and Reece were precautionary," he said. "I don’t want to take any risks at this stage of the season. They had minor tweaks or knocks."
Focus Shifts to Arsenal Semi-Final
The rationale behind the caution becomes clear with Chelsea's immediate fixture list. The Blues face Premier League leaders Arsenal on Wednesday in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-finals.
Rosenior emphasised his squad depth and a long-term view, suggesting he will not rush players back. "I feel like I’ve got such a good squad here that I don’t need to risk their health," he affirmed. "I believe in this group. If we want to have a really strong season, we need to use them."
This leaves all three players as doubts for the high-stakes clash against Mikel Arteta's side, with final assessments to be made ahead of the match.
Positive Signs from Rotated Side
Despite the absentees, Rosenior had plenty of reasons for optimism after the emphatic win over Charlton. He reserved particular praise for his attacking line, which featured teenage striker Marc Guiu from the start.
"I was delighted with the starting XI, I was delighted with the front three," Rosenior commented. "I felt Ali (Alejandro Garnacho) kept going in his one v ones, Marc Guiu was magnificent and deserved his goal. Jamie (Gittens) looked like he was going at the defenders, created a lot of moments."
The performance of the supporting cast, in a match where Chelsea's quality ultimately told, has given the new manager confidence. "They’ve given me cause for optimism for the future," he concluded, highlighting the positive start to his tenure and the squad options at his disposal.
