Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has given Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw extra time to prove their fitness for Wednesday's Premier League clash at Newcastle United after both were forced off with illness during Sunday's win over Crystal Palace.
Shaw was substituted in the first half, replaced by Noussair Mazraoui, while Maguire exited during the second half and was replaced by Ayden Heaven. Carrick confirmed neither defender sustained an injury, but both were unwell.
Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Carrick said: "We're hoping so. We're working toward it. They weren't feeling too good, so we've still got a bit of time to the game and we'll just have to see how they feel. We'll obviously give them every chance." Both players travelled with the squad to Tyneside on Tuesday afternoon.
United could also be without Lisandro Martinez, Mason Mount and Matthijs de Ligt. Martinez has missed the last two matches with a calf problem, Mount has been absent for five games due to a training injury, and De Ligt has not featured since the end of November with a back issue.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe confirmed striker Nick Woltemade is a doubt with illness, saying: "Nick has come down ill. There's potentially an illness in the squad. He hasn't trained but we will give him every chance for tomorrow." Tino Livramento is also close to a return but Wednesday's game may come too soon.
