Michael Carrick has called up 20-year-old defender Habeeb Ogunneye to train with Manchester United's first team as he prepares for his first match in charge against Manchester City on Saturday. Ogunneye, who was recently recalled from a loan spell at Newport County, joined the senior squad at Carrington this week.
The right-back's promotion follows a difficult period at Newport, where he fell down the pecking order after manager Dave Hughes was sacked and replaced by Christian Fuchs. Despite the setback, Carrick is eager to reinforce the link between the academy and first team, a philosophy he has championed since taking over as interim head coach.
Carrick has also promoted Travis Binnion from his role as Under-21s lead coach to his coaching staff. Binnion, who previously served as the academy's head of player development and coaching, will help integrate young talent into the senior setup.
Speaking on the Inside Carrington podcast, Carrick said: "I've absolutely loved it. Everyone needs a chance. Every younger player needs a chance and wants a chance. It's up to them to then earn the opportunity." He added: "Seeing them flourish and almost fly because they've got that feeling they play for the first team... it's what the fans want to see, that freshness and rawness and unpredictable talent."
Reports suggest Ogunneye is likely to be sent out on another loan in January to gain more first-team experience. In the meantime, his inclusion in training is a sign of Carrick's commitment to bridging the gap between the academy and the senior side.
