Former Liverpool defender and prominent pundit Jamie Carragher has thrown his support behind Fulham manager Marco Silva, suggesting he is the ideal candidate for a club like Tottenham Hotspur. This endorsement comes as current Spurs boss Thomas Frank faces intense scrutiny following a dismal home defeat and reports of player unrest.
Frank's Tottenham Tenure Under Threat
The pressure on Thomas Frank escalated dramatically after Tottenham's 2-1 home loss to Fulham at the weekend. The result means only Wolverhampton Wanderers have a worse home record in the Premier League this season. The defeat was compounded by a disastrous start, with Fulham's Harry Wilson capitalising on a glaring error from Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario to score after just six minutes.
The Italian shot-stopper's mistake, losing the ball on the edge of his own area, led to immediate boos from sections of the home crowd. The jeers continued whenever Vicario touched the ball, prompting a furious reaction from both Frank and defender Pedro Porro.
Fan Disconnect and Player Confusion
In a tense post-match press conference, Frank condemned the behaviour of some supporters. "I didn't like that our fans booed at him [Vicario] straight after and a few times he touched the ball," he stated. "They can't be true Tottenham fans because everyone supports each other when you are on the pitch." He clarified that while post-match criticism was acceptable, booing during the game was "unacceptable."
This incident highlights a growing disconnect. The Telegraph reported last month that Spurs held an emergency meeting specifically to address the rift with their fanbase. Ahead of the trip to Newcastle, Frank acknowledged the frustration, saying, "We are nothing without fans. Tottenham Hotspur is nothing without the fans."
Further compounding Frank's problems, a fresh report from The Sun claims some Tottenham players are frustrated with his tactical instructions. The report suggests stars are confused over their roles due to last-minute changes in game plans, despite Frank insisting he has the full backing of the club's hierarchy.
Carragher's Silva Endorsement
Amid this turmoil, Jamie Carragher has pinpointed Fulham's Marco Silva as a manager ready for a step up. Speaking on The Overlap, Carragher expressed his long-standing admiration for the Portuguese coach.
"I’ve always been a fan of Marco Silva, even when he first came to the Premier League with Hull," Carragher said. "I think he’s the one manager Everton should’ve stuck with." He directly linked Silva to the vacancy that may soon arise at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
"I’ve always seen Marco Silva [at the level of] Tottenham – not quite to go from a [club like] Fulham to Liverpool or Manchester City... but a level just below where they are trying for Champions League," Carragher explained. He concluded that Silva "deserves one of those jobs when they next come up," firmly placing the Spurs role in that category.
With fan patience wearing thin, player morale reportedly dipping, and a respected pundit advocating for a rival manager, Thomas Frank's position at Tottenham appears increasingly precarious as the Premier League season progresses.
