In one of the most dramatic upsets in recent racing history, French outsider Calandagan produced a breathtaking performance to claim the QIPCO Champion Stakes at Ascot, leaving favourite Inspiral and the racing world stunned.
French Raider Defies the Odds
The Jerome Reynier-trained four-year-old, sent off at 40-1, showed tremendous heart and stamina to hold off the late charge of 11-10 favourite Inspiral in a nail-biting finish that had the Ascot crowd on their feet.
Ridden superbly by Mickael Barzalona, Calandagan took the lead entering the final furlong and dug deep when challenged by the John and Thady Gosden-trained mare, winning by a neck in a time of 2m 7.25s.
Dream Realised for Connections
For trainer Jerome Reynier, based in Marseille, this represented a career-defining moment. "This is what dreams are made of," an emotional Reynier stated. "To come here with an outsider and beat the best horses in Europe - it's unbelievable."
The victory was particularly sweet given Calandagan's previous form, having finished sixth in the Prix du Jockey Club and winning the Prix du Lys at ParisLongchamp in June.
British Champions Day Drama
The £1.3 million showpiece event lived up to its billing as the climax of the British racing season, delivering high drama and unexpected results. Third place went to Via Sistina, who finished two and a quarter lengths behind the front pair.
The result continues a remarkable pattern for the Champion Stakes, which has seen several shock winners in recent years, though few at such generous odds as Calandagan.
What Next for the Champion?
Questions now turn to future plans for the new champion, with connections likely to consider international options and potentially the breeding shed for the son of Galiway.
For today, however, the celebrations belong to the French team who pulled off one of the most memorable victories in the storied history of this prestigious race.
