Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has sent the rumour mill into overdrive after making intriguing comments about Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim, who has been heavily linked with the Old Trafford hotseat.
The Portuguese midfielder, currently on international duty, was asked about his compatriot's future amid growing speculation that Amorim could replace under-pressure Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag this summer.
Fernandes offered a cryptic response that will set tongues wagging among the United faithful, telling reporters: "I don't know if he will come or not. Only he can know. I hope he makes the best decision for his career."
The 39-year-old Amorim has emerged as one of Europe's most sought-after managers after guiding Sporting to their second league title in four years, playing an attractive brand of football that has drawn comparisons with some of the game's top tactical minds.
Ten Hag's Uncertain Future
Current United manager Erik ten Hag finds himself under increasing pressure after a disappointing Premier League campaign that saw the club finish outside the Champions League places. Despite winning the FA Cup against rivals Manchester City, the Dutchman's future remains uncertain under new minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
The INEOS chief is conducting a thorough end-of-season review that will determine whether Ten Hag remains at the helm or makes way for a new appointment.
Amorim's Rising Stock
Amorim was previously considered the frontrunner for the Liverpool job before the Reds ultimately opted for Feyenoord's Arne Slot. His tactical acumen and ability to develop young talent have made him an attractive proposition for several top clubs across the continent.
"He's a great coach, one of the best in Portugal right now," Fernandes added. "He's done an excellent job at Sporting. He has in-depth knowledge of football and has created a fantastic environment there."
The United skipper's comments will undoubtedly fuel speculation that the Red Devils hierarchy have identified Amorim as their primary target should they decide to part ways with Ten Hag in the coming weeks.
