Jordan Bos's Late Strike Secures Socceroos' Victory in FIFA Series Friendly
In a tightly contested football friendly at Sydney's Accor Stadium, Jordan Bos emerged as the hero for Australia, scoring an 85th-minute goal to secure a 1-0 win over Cameroon. This match, part of the inaugural FIFA Series, provided a crucial boost for the Socceroos as they ramp up preparations for the upcoming World Cup.
A Game of Narrow Margins and Missed Opportunities
The encounter was far from a classic, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut chances on a challenging pitch. Australia dominated possession in the second half, holding 65% of the ball and outshooting Cameroon six to one, but it took a moment of quick thinking from Bos to break the deadlock. He capitalized on a pass from Paul Okon-Engstler that slipped through Ajdin Hrustić, firing home to spare Hrustić's blushes after the latter had a penalty saved in the 70th minute.
Cameroon's goalkeeper, Devis Epassy, was largely untroubled until the late stages, with his first significant save denying Hrustić from the spot. The Indomitable Lions managed six shots in the first half, but none seriously tested Maty Ryan in the Australian goal, with Christian Kofane's 18th-minute header being their best effort.
Second-Half Spark and Defensive Solidity
Australia's performance improved markedly after halftime, thanks in part to the introductions of Nestory Irankunda and Awer Mabil. Irankunda, in particular, added energy and threat, forcing a sharp save from Epassy in the 80th minute before Bos delivered the decisive blow. Coach Tony Popovic praised the team's second-half display, noting increased compactness and aggression.
Defensively, the Socceroos were robust, with 18-year-old Lucas Herrington making a confident starting debut alongside Alessandro Circati and Jason Geria. The trio formed a solid backline, limiting Cameroon to speculative long-range efforts and ensuring a clean sheet—a positive contrast to recent matches against Venezuela and Colombia.
Momentum Building for World Cup Campaign
This victory snaps a three-game losing streak for Australia, dating back to a defeat against the United States in October, and marks their first goal since that match. With the World Cup on the horizon, the win provides a much-needed boost of momentum. Riley McGree emphasized its importance, stating that confidence is key for any team moving forward.
Popovic acknowledged that there is still work to be done before facing Turkey or Kosovo in Vancouver, but the contributions from Bos and Irankunda offer hope. The Socceroos will look to build on this result in their next friendly against Curaçao, as they fine-tune their tactics and squad ahead of the global tournament.
