Josh Allen Sacked 8 Times as Texans Stun Bills in Thrilling 23-19 Victory
Bills Fall to Texans 23-19 as Allen Sacked Eight Times

The Buffalo Bills' aspirations suffered a significant blow on Thursday night as a ferocious Houston Texans defence orchestrated a stunning 23-19 victory, leaving the title-contending Bills with a 7-4 record.

A Defensive Masterclass from Houston

From the opening whistle, the Texans' defensive line imposed its will on the game. The focal point of their assault was Bills quarterback Josh Allen, who endured a career-worst night, being sacked a staggering eight times and hit on four other occasions. This relentless pressure disrupted Buffalo's offensive rhythm throughout the contest.

The Texans' defensive star, Will Anderson Jr., was particularly destructive, recording two and a half sacks. His most impressive play came early in the third quarter when he initially missed Allen near the line of scrimmage, only to get up, chase the quarterback across the field, and finally drag him down for a massive 18-yard loss, forcing a punt.

A Frantic Finish Seals the Result

Despite the constant harassment, Allen nearly engineered a miraculous comeback in the final minutes. With the game on the line, he took consecutive sacks, setting up a seemingly impossible fourth-and-27. In a moment of desperation, Allen completed a short pass to Josh Palmer, who then tossed a lateral to Khalil Shakir, resulting in a 44-yard gain.

After a false-start penalty, the Bills faced a fourth-and-6. However, any hope of a last-gasp victory was extinguished when Texans rookie Calen Bullock intercepted Allen's pass at the Houston 9-yard line with just 24 seconds remaining on the clock.

Fallout and Reaction from a Brutal Encounter

The physical toll on Allen was evident; he was slow to get up after one first-half sack and later revealed his left shoulder had "gone a little numb" from an awkward landing. Reflecting on the eight sacks, Allen admitted, "It's not fun. I ran into a couple myself. I've got to be better at throwing the ball away. Too many times, I was going backwards." In total, the sacks cost the Bills 70 yards in lost field position.

Bills coach Sean McDermott was visibly concerned about his quarterback's well-being, stating, "When they hit our quarterback 12 times, I don't like that. I don't like that stat at all. It's just not a healthy way to play and it's not a good way to keep our quarterback healthy for the rest of the season. We've got to play better."

While the defence struggled, there were bright spots for Buffalo. Khalil Shakir led the receivers with eight catches for 110 yards, and running back James Cook rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown. The Bills also played a second consecutive game without receiver Keon Coleman, who was a healthy scratch after being late to a team meeting.

Ultimately, Allen summed up the team's frustration: "We had a chance to win it there at the end. We did a good job of staying in it... We've got to find a way, and we didn't." The Texans' defence, however, found a way, celebrating a statement win that was capped by that decisive third-quarter sack from Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson Jr.
