Long-serving Cincinnati Bengals journalist Jay Morrison has announced he will be taking an indefinite break from covering the NFL team following the sudden and tragic death of his wife.
A Heartbreaking Announcement
Morrison, who reports on the Bengals for Sports Illustrated, shared the devastating news on Monday morning via his social media account. He revealed that his wife, Nicki, had passed away after what was described as 'a routine medical procedure' on Friday turned catastrophic.
"For the first time in 14 years, I watched a Bengals game with my wife Nicki yesterday. It will be her last," Morrison posted. He explained that she had been on life support since the procedure, waiting for organ recipient matches, which he called her "final gift in a magnificently beautiful and selfless life."
A Final Gift and a Celebration of Life
The reporter stated that the family would be saying their final goodbyes and that he was sharing the news publicly to explain his absence from his professional duties. In a poignant tribute, Morrison said there would be no traditional funeral, in accordance with his wife's wishes.
Instead, the family plans to hold a celebration of life "once my daughter, son and I can compose ourselves enough to plan a party worthy enough of the most beautiful, caring, bad-a** rocker chick I've been proud to share a life with for 37 years."
Condolences from the Bengals Organisation
During his regular Monday press conference, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor offered his public support and condolences to Morrison and his family. "I know Jay Morrison and his family are dealing with something tough right now," Taylor said.
He went on to praise Morrison, stating, "Jay, as you all know, is one of the greatest guys in this business. So thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. I hate that he's got to go through that, but I know we're all here for him." Taylor emphasised that he wanted to ensure Morrison and his family were aware of the team's support during this profoundly difficult time.
