Marcus Rashford could be reintegrated into the Manchester United first-team squad if Barcelona decide against activating their €26 million (£26 million) option to purchase the forward permanently, according to reports. The 28-year-old is currently on a season-long loan at the Camp Nou, but uncertainty surrounds his long-term future, with some sources suggesting the Spanish club may seek to negotiate a lower fee.
Premier League and European clubs have reportedly made enquiries about a potential summer transfer, but if a move does not materialise, Rashford is likely to return to Old Trafford. Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has urged the club to give the academy graduate another chance, particularly on the left wing, a position he believes suits him perfectly.
Speaking to TNT Sports, Hargreaves said: 'I think Marcus has done brilliantly at Barcelona. But again, I'd love to see him on the left-hand side [at United]. That's probably the only spot where I think there's a bit of space for somebody in that left-wing position. I think Marcus would suit brilliantly.' He added: 'Sometimes the change of scenery is good for both, but I'd love to see him. I just love watching Marcus play, and he's an academy boy. The climate's different now, so he might thrive in that as well. I hope he stays, but I can understand if he doesn't as well.'
Rashford has enjoyed a productive season at Barcelona, scoring 10 goals and providing 13 assists in 39 appearances across all competitions. However, he has been used as a substitute more frequently in recent weeks. When asked about a permanent move, Rashford told TNT Sports in October: '[I want to stay for] as many [seasons] as possible. We will see. I have to focus on trying to do my job and trying to help the team in whichever way I can.' He also praised Barcelona's style of play, calling it 'amazing football' and a learning experience.
Manchester United manager Michael Carrick or a potential successor could play a role in reintegrating Rashford, with Hargreaves suggesting a fresh start under different management might benefit the forward. The club's decision will depend on Barcelona's next move regarding the purchase clause.
