Arteta's Arsenal Tenure at Risk Without Premier League Victory
Former Arsenal star Robert Pires has issued a stark warning that manager Mikel Arteta will definitely be sacked if the club does not secure the Premier League title this season. The Gunners' lead has dwindled to just three points following a critical loss to rivals Manchester City, intensifying pressure on the Spanish coach.
Title Race Tensions Mount After Back-to-Back Defeats
Arteta's squad has suffered consecutive league defeats for the first time this campaign, handing momentum to Pep Guardiola's Manchester City at a pivotal juncture. With City poised to close the gap further if they defeat Burnley, the title race could soon hinge on goal difference, adding to the drama of the final five matches.
The recent clash at the Etihad Stadium saw Arsenal fall behind to a stunning goal from Rayan Cherki, but Kai Havertz quickly equalised after capitalising on a goalkeeping error by Gianluigi Donnarumma. However, Erling Haaland's second-half strike secured victory for City, leaving Arsenal's championship aspirations in precarious balance.
Pires' Dire Prediction for Arteta's Future
Pires, a two-time Premier League winner with Arsenal, emphasised that the club's management is likely to seek a new coach if Arteta fails to deliver silverware. In an interview with Foot Mercato back in September, the 52-year-old icon stated, "In my opinion, if Arsenal don't win a trophy this year, the management will consider finding another coach. He's been here for five years and unfortunately, the title has eluded him. What's important for the fans is the league title."
He further highlighted that Arsenal's significant summer investments, including signings like Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyokeres, have raised expectations. "Money was spent in the summer transfer window. He made certain demands, which the Arsenal board has met. If Arsenal don't win the league, I think there will definitely be a change on the bench," Pires asserted.
Arteta's Transformation and Current Challenges
Under Arteta's leadership, Arsenal has evolved from a team struggling for European qualification to a consistent title contender. The club remains in the Champions League semi-finals against Atletico Madrid, offering a potential double triumph this season. However, the loss to City has reignited fears of extending Arsenal's trophyless streak, which dates back to the 2020 FA Cup.
Despite the setback, Arteta remains optimistic, urging his players to focus on the remaining fixtures. "If they need to be more convinced, I think they are now more convinced. They were talking about it in the dressing room," he said. "It's a new league now. We have three points of advantage and five games to play. So everything is still to play for."
He added that the squad is determined to bounce back, with players already discussing their next opportunity. "That's the feeling, immediately you could tell that they were talking about, and they said, 'Okay, we lost an opportunity today, but we have the biggest one now in the next five games, so let's do it.'"
