Arsenal Price Lewis-Skelly for Man Utd Transfer After Arteta

Arsenal Establish Valuation for Lewis-Skelly Amid Manchester United Interest

Arsenal are reportedly prepared to consider offers from Manchester United for defender Myles Lewis-Skelly during the upcoming summer transfer window, provided that the Gunners' financial demands are satisfied. United have identified Lewis-Skelly as a potential long-term replacement for Luke Shaw in the left-back position and have been encouraged by Arsenal's willingness to negotiate a sale.

Game Time Challenges for Lewis-Skelly at Arsenal

Myles Lewis-Skelly experienced a breakthrough season under manager Mikel Arteta last year, but his opportunities have significantly diminished in the 2025/26 campaign. The summer arrival of Piero Hincapie has intensified competition at left-back, with Riccardo Calafiori also ahead of the 19-year-old in the defensive hierarchy.

Across all competitions, Lewis-Skelly has made 28 appearances, yet he has started only once in the Premier League, accumulating just over 300 minutes of league action. With Hincapie's initial loan from Bayer Leverkusen set to become a permanent transfer this summer, it appears increasingly likely that Lewis-Skelly may need to seek a move elsewhere to secure more consistent playing time.

Arsenal's Pragmatic Transfer Strategy

While Arsenal take pride in their academy graduates, the club's hierarchy, including Arteta, is adopting a realistic approach to squad management. According to BBC Sport, Arsenal are open to selling both Lewis-Skelly and fellow young talent Ethan Nwaneri, with a combined asking price of £100 million for the duo.

Nwaneri is currently on loan with Marseille, having departed in January to pursue more regular game time, mirroring Lewis-Skelly's situation where new signings have limited opportunities. This stance reflects a broader squad overhaul, with players like Gabriel Jesus, Ben White, and Gabriel Martinelli also potentially available for transfer if suitable offers emerge.

Arteta's Emphasis on Meritocracy at Arsenal

In a press conference ahead of Arsenal's Premier League match against Bournemouth, Mikel Arteta addressed the balance between promoting academy graduates and maintaining competitive success. He stressed that young players must earn their opportunities through sustained high performance, rather than receiving preferential treatment.

"It's part of us," Arteta said regarding Hale End products Lewis-Skelly and Nwaneri. "I think at the end, what it has to define this football club is to seek for the excellence and to seek for the best, regardless of whether you're coming from the academy or from abroad."

He added, "At the end, if we can have players from Hale End, obviously much better because the identity is there. We grow with them, and they know exactly what we're looking for. But then they have to earn it, and not for a week, not for a month, not for years like anybody else."

Arteta concluded by highlighting the competitive environment, stating, "The margins are shorter, but we're doing something as well that is unprecedented. We have players that played in competitions that nobody else has done at that age. I think the balance is there. We are doing everything that we can to accommodate that, especially because they deserve the opportunity, which is the best thing. Nobody is here to give a gift, an opportunity to somebody that doesn't deserve it. Everybody that has been in and around the first team, they deserve to be there."
