Arsenal Could Save £21m on Porto Midfielder

Arsenal could secure a significant reduction on the transfer fee for Porto midfielder Victor Froholdt, with the Gunners among several Premier League clubs monitoring the 20-year-old Denmark international. Reports emerged on Thursday linking Mikel Arteta's side with a move for the talented midfielder, who has impressed during his debut season in Portugal.

According to The Times, Arsenal have been informed that it would take approximately £52 million to bring Froholdt to north London this summer. This represents a £21 million reduction from the £73 million release clause written into his contract with Porto, a sum the Portuguese club acknowledges is unrealistic. Newcastle United are also said to be keen on the player.

Impressive Season

Froholdt has caught the eye during his maiden season in Portugal following his switch from Copenhagen last summer. In the 2025/26 campaign, he has netted eight times and registered six assists across 50 appearances in all competitions to date. Despite being only 20 years old, the midfielder, who typically operates on the right of a midfield three, has already earned 10 senior caps for Denmark.

He will not, however, be participating in this summer's World Cup, as Denmark fell to Czechia on penalties in the play-off final last month. Alongside Arsenal and Newcastle, Danish publication Bold reports that Liverpool are also tracking the midfielder. He remains under contract with Porto until 2030.

Arsenal's Transfer Priorities

Heading into the summer transfer window, Arteta's side have identified a new central midfielder and full-back as key targets ahead of the upcoming season. However, securing a new left-winger remains the top priority. Paris Saint-Germain's Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is the most coveted option for the Gunners, though PSG have made it clear he is not available. Arsenal will come up against the winger in the Champions League final in Budapest later this month.

Arsenal secured their spot in the showpiece finale with a 2-1 aggregate victory over Atletico Madrid. PSG edged past Bayern Munich 5-6 on aggregate, with the two clubs set to clash on Saturday, 30 May (5pm kick-off).
