Araujo's Liverpool renaissance after depression battle

Ronald Araujo has become a key figure in Liverpool's defence since joining on a season-long loan from Barcelona, less than a year after a period of depression led to compassionate leave from the Spanish club.

The 27-year-old Uruguayan has been integral to a defence that has conceded just one Premier League goal with 11 men on the pitch since August, with Liverpool winning eight of their last 10 games.

Rock Bottom and Compassionate Leave

Araujo has admitted he hit rock bottom last season, with depression taking hold after a red card in a Champions League defeat to Chelsea in November 2025. The catalyst for an enforced break came when his wife, Abi, showed him death threats the couple's daughters were receiving online.

"I try to open the umbrella and cover myself, but when they touch the family it's very f***** up," he told Mundo Deportivo earlier this year. "I don't understand the evil of the people, they are wishing death to our daughters," she told me. When things get to that dimension, you rethink a lot of things, you see how crazy society is or how crazy people are on social media."

Araujo was away from football for around five weeks, seeking solace in his faith during a trip to Israel and beginning work with psychologists to rediscover his passion for the game.

Return to Action and Liverpool Move

"I hadn't felt right for a long time," Araujo told The Times last week. "And I wasn't enjoying the thing I love most, which is football. I realised I had to put my hand up, ask for help and talk not just to the people closest to me, but to professionals as well."

He returned for Barcelona on January 31 in a 3-1 win at Elche, going on to captain the side four times before the end of the campaign. By the summer, he was ready for a fresh start, and talks with Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola led to a loan deal that saw him take a significant paycut to move to Merseyside.

Impact at Liverpool

Araujo's full-blooded displays have given a steely new dimension to the team. "It is fully down to him," captain Virgil van Dijk said. "We as a team welcomed him with open arms. We can see his defensive qualities, his presence and his positive attitude towards the team."

A thunderous tackle on Malick Yalcouye in the 2-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion was celebrated like a goal, and one social media appraisal likened him to "having Darwin Nunez at right-back".

A £47m clause was inserted into the deal if Liverpool wish to make it permanent, though no discussions have taken place with Araujo's representatives about that prospect yet.
