Andy Reid to Stay as Chiefs Coach Despite Playoff Exit and Mahomes Injury
Andy Reid staying with Chiefs after playoff miss

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is set to remain with the franchise, despite the team's shock elimination from the NFL playoffs and a serious injury to star quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Reid's Future Confirmed After Playoff Hopes End

The Chiefs' decade-long streak of reaching the postseason came to a crushing end earlier this month following a 16-13 defeat by the Los Angeles Chargers. This marked the first time since 2014 that the team has missed the playoffs, sparking immediate speculation about the future of their veteran coach.

However, NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero have reported that Reid has no intention of stepping down. A source close to the coach stated plainly, 'Coach Reid ain't going out like this', while another simply said, 'He'll be back'.

A Season of Setbacks for Kansas City

The loss to the Chargers proved to be a nightmare for the franchise, compounded by the news that quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a torn ACL during the game. This injury is likely to sideline him for a large portion of the 2026 season.

Since taking over the Chiefs in 2013, Andy Reid has been the architect of their success, leading them to three Super Bowl victories, numerous AFC West titles, and over 300 wins. His decision to stay provides stability during a turbulent period.

The report did note, however, that offensive coordinator Matt Nagy could be parting ways with the team after opting not to sign a contract extension.

Uncertainty Surrounds Travis Kelce's Career

While Reid's position seems secure, questions persist over the future of veteran tight end Travis Kelce. The 36-year-old refused to deny retirement rumours in the aftermath of the Chargers defeat, having briefly considered stepping away after last season's Super Bowl loss.

With Mahomes injured, this offseason could present a logical moment for Kelce to retire. When asked about his future, Kelce deflected, saying, 'I think I would rather just keep the focus... on this team right now'. He emphasised his focus on winning the final three games of the season.

Statistically, Kelce's production has dipped. Through 14 games, he has 797 receiving yards and five touchdowns. While he should surpass last season's career-low of 823 yards, he is on track for fewer than 90 catches for the first time since 2017. Currently with 67 receptions, he would need to average 7.6 catches per game in the final three contests to reach 90, a tall order given he's only hit that mark three times this season.

The coming months will be pivotal for the Chiefs as they plan for a season without their star quarterback and potentially without one of their most iconic offensive weapons, all under the continued stewardship of Andy Reid.
