Ruben Amorim was reportedly ready to quit Manchester United just three days before he was ultimately sacked, according to sources close to the club. The Portuguese manager’s tenure ended earlier this month after a disappointing 14-month spell at Old Trafford.
Amorim’s relationship with director of football Jason Wilcox deteriorated significantly, with one comment from Wilcox particularly irking the manager. The tension escalated to the point where Amorim considered forgoing any compensation and resigning outright. However, after a discussion with his agent, Raul Costa, he changed his mind, with Costa arguing that Amorim should either be backed or sacked with full compensation.
Amorim was eventually dismissed following a draw with Leeds United, securing a £12 million payoff. Just days before his exit, he delivered a bizarre rant about his role, insisting: 'I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach of Manchester United.' He added that he would not quit and would continue until replaced.
Manchester United have since appointed Michael Carrick on a deal until the end of the season, with the former midfielder beating Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to the position.
