Alex Scott in Tears as BBC Football Focus Airs Final Episode
Alex Scott in Tears on BBC Football Focus Final Episode

Alex Scott, the presenter of BBC's Football Focus, was visibly emotional during the final episode of the long-running show, which aired for the last time after 52 years. As the programme drew to a close, pundit Garth Crooks presented Scott with a framed photograph of herself alongside Bob Wilson, the show's very first presenter.

Emotional Final Moments

Upon receiving the gift, Scott struggled to hold back tears, exclaiming, "That's got me." The photo bore a message reading: "Alex, congratulations for all you have achieved." Scott, clearly moved, thanked Crooks for being on the show and reflected on the programme's legacy.

"For 52 years, wow, this show has done one thing, week in week out, it has brought football into your Saturday afternoons," she said. "Whether it was Bob Wilson in 1974 or any of the brilliant presenters that sat in this chair after him, the thing that never changed was you, the fans."

Struggling to compose herself, Scott added: "I won't pretend this isn't hard, as you can see, but what I know is the football doesn't stop, the story doesn't stop and the goals don't stop, the drama, the heartbreak, it just finds a new home."

Farewell to a Saturday Staple

Scott expressed gratitude to everyone who had worked on Football Focus, saying, "Thank you for making Saturday lunchtime something to look forward to. It has been an honour. This is Football Focus for the very last time." She then invited Bob Wilson to have the final word.

Wilson, in a pre-recorded message, said: "Alex, thank you so much – all good things come to an end. Thank you to all of you at home for watching Football Focus for the last 52 years, we've had a ball."

The final episode marked the end of an era for the BBC's Saturday lunchtime football programme, which first aired in 1974. The show has been a staple for football fans, providing previews, analysis, and interviews. The decision to end the programme was part of a wider review of BBC sports programming.

As the credits rolled, viewers were treated to a montage of memorable moments from the show's history, celebrating its enduring impact on football broadcasting.
