A TV set designer who worked on The Marvelous Mrs Maisel and Goosebumps was allegedly stabbed to death by her husband, before he killed himself in what was apparently a murder-suicide.
Mary Kate Goudling was 34 years old when she was found stabbed in the back in New York City in the early hours of Tuesday morning (July 21). The body of her husband, Joseph Azzaretto, was found hanging from a tree in a nearby park around six hours later, according to law enforcement. He also worked in the film industry.
Their 11-month-old son Nolan was left alone with his mother after the attack, and thankfully recovered by a friend of the couple.
Friend alleged confession
The friend alleged Azzaretto confessed to the killing via phone, with a family member reporting hearing the same.
In a tragic twist of fate, it isn't the first violent act to rock the family after Joseph's brother Nicholas Azzaretto pleaded guilty to murder in the third degree and voluntary manslaughter after fatally shooting their father, Frank, at home in 2020.
At his court hearing, it was heard Frank had a history of abusive behaviour. According to the report, he had threatened to punch his wife, along with throwing plants and pictures around, before being shot by Nicholas.
Tributes pour in
Nicholas was sentenced to 10 years of probation and two years under electronic monitoring for the crime.
Tributes have flooded in for Mary Kate, with one fan writing on X: “A heartbreaking and tragic situation. The baby losing both parents in such a horrific way is the most devastating part. Prayers for the child and everyone affected by this.”
Another said: “That poor woman and baby, my God.”
