The rise of artificial intelligence is undeniable, and it has now demonstrated who should have been selected for England's World Cup squad based on statistical analysis. Thomas Tuchel announced the 26 players he will take to North America last week, but only 16 of those chosen by the German would have been picked by the technology platform PLAIER.
How PLAIER Works
PLAIER utilises a database of over 300,000 footballers across more than 200 countries to correlate data and provide precise analysis. The AI squad selects players based on the likelihood of team success on the pitch, rather than individual quality.
Key Inclusions and Omissions
Some of the names included in the AI squad are high-profile omissions from Tuchel's squad, including Phil Foden and Cole Palmer, as well as Harry Maguire, Adam Wharton, and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Tuchel omitted Foden and Palmer, stating he is unsure of Foden's best position and that Palmer has lacked form. However, the AI technology suggests both should be in the squad.
Ten of Tuchel's selections would not have made the AI squad. The AI would replace Morgan Rogers with Phil Foden, while Jordan Henderson and Kobbie Mainoo would also miss out. Curtis Jones is included in the AI squad instead.
Defensive Differences
While the AI selection matches Tuchel's for wingers and strikers, there is a stark contrast in defence. Tuchel selected Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi, Jarrel Quansah, Dan Burn, and John Stones. The AI would only keep Guehi, instead choosing James Tarkowski and Lewis Dunk alongside Maguire. At full-back, Tuchel picked Reece James, Djed Spence, Tino Livramento, and Nico O'Reilly, but the AI would only include James and Livramento, adding Lewis Hall and Alexander-Arnold.
Goalkeeping Choices
Jordan Pickford and Dean Henderson are in both squads, while Nick Pope replaces James Trafford in the AI selection.
