Brazilian Derby Erupts into Unprecedented Violence with 23 Red Cards
The Campeonato Mineiro final in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, descended into utter chaos on Sunday as a hostile local derby between Cruzeiro and Atletico Mineiro culminated in a staggering 23 players being sent off following a mass brawl. Atletico Mineiro secured a 1-0 victory, but the result was completely overshadowed by the unsavoury scenes that unfolded on the pitch, involving players, substitutes, and staff from both teams.
Incident Sparks Widespread Melee
The confrontation ignited during second-half stoppage time when Atletico goalkeeper Everson pushed Cruzeiro midfielder Christian to the ground after a collision while chasing a loose ball. As Christian lay prone, Everson placed his legs near the player's face and exchanged heated words. This action quickly provoked an ambush by angry Cruzeiro players, with one appearing to strike Everson from behind, sparking a full-scale melee that spread across the goal area, six-yard box, and off the pitch.
Security personnel struggled to separate the teams as punches and kicks were traded wildly. The tensions failed to subside, with the violence shifting towards the centre of the pitch. Notably, Atletico forward Hulk, the 39-year-old former Porto and Zenit Saint Petersburg star, was captured on video throwing a punch to the back of Cruzeiro captain Lucas Romero, who was blindsided and immediately fell to the ground.
Record-Breaking Disciplinary Action
The 23 red cards issued eclipse the previous Brazilian record of 22 set in a 1954 match between Portuguesa and Botafogo. The Brazilian Football Confederation is yet to announce suspensions, but heavy punishments are anticipated for both clubs in response to the ugly scenes. Hulk expressed remorse post-match, stating, "It's regrettable, I have never seen violence like that in any football game. We cannot set that example because it ends up having repercussions all around the world. We have a responsibility to safeguard our image and the image of the institution."
Post-Match Reactions and Future Fixtures
Cruzeiro coach Tite thanked fans for their support, emphasising his respect for them despite the loss. Meanwhile, both teams face upcoming challenges in Brazil Serie A. Cruzeiro, currently 19th after four games, will play Flamengo on Wednesday, while 17th-placed Atletico Mineiro hosts Internacional. The incident has drawn global attention, highlighting concerns over violence in football and the need for stricter disciplinary measures.
