A 52-year-old skydiver has died after her parachute reportedly failed to open during a solo jump in Argentina. Rosana Mabel Back, a therapist and professional writer, was using unfamiliar equipment when the incident occurred on Sunday near Miramar, about 200 miles south of Buenos Aires.
The Aero Club Miramar expressed their condolences in a statement, saying: 'We deeply regret the tragic accident that occurred near the aerodrome, in which a skydiver lost her life. We are providing support to her family, loved ones, and colleagues in this difficult time.' The club also noted that it has no connection with the skydiving activity that took place at the provincial premises of the Miramar airport.
The Argentine Writer's Society paid tribute to Back, describing her as a 'dealer colleague' and remembering 'her friendship and that warm laugh that best characterised her'. An autopsy has been ordered, and experts will review the equipment she used amid concerns it may have been faulty. An investigation into her death is ongoing.
This tragedy follows a separate incident in Australia, where eight skydivers safely jumped from a plane just seconds before it crashed, killing the pilot, Paul Smith, 54. The skydivers had leapt from about 14,000 feet two minutes before the crash in Moruya, New South Wales.
