Kai Rooney nears Man Utd pro deal as Gabriel exit looms

Kai Rooney is fast approaching a major career milestone at Manchester United. The 16-year-old forward, son of Red Devils legend Wayne Rooney, has risen through the ranks since joining the academy at 11 years old and currently stars for the Under-18s, who are managed by former United hero Darren Fletcher.

Professional contract eligibility

After signing a scholarship agreement in July to enter the club's Professional Development Phase, Rooney will become eligible to sign his first professional contract when he turns 17 on November 2 - a path that looks significantly less clear for fellow prospect JJ Gabriel.

The 16-year-old requested his release from United last month and has failed to return to Carrington, instead spending the past three weeks in Castelldefels, Catalonia, training with a private coach.

JJ Gabriel's uncertain future

Gabriel is considered one of the most promising young talents in global football, and his potential exit would represent a crushing blow for United's academy. The club have reportedly put forward a scholarship contract to Gabriel - an agreement he qualified for after celebrating his 16th birthday on Tuesday.

The forward has attracted attention from some of Europe's elite clubs, with Barcelona and Real Madrid both holding discussions over signing the teenager. Sky Germany reports that Bayern Munich have initiated talks with Gabriel's representatives.

Wayne Rooney's comparison

With Gabriel's future at Manchester looking uncertain at best, United have the chance to secure the second generation of the Wayne family in the form of Kai. The teenager predominantly operates on the right wing, in contrast to his father, though the pair share a strikingly similar approach to the game, according to the United legend.

During the Disney+ documentary series, The Real Rooneys, Wayne explained: "Kai plays for Manchester United in the academy and he is very driven. He scores goals and he wants it. It's very similar to me, it's like watching myself with a left foot. It's mad."

Kai's season so far

Kai netted twice at U18 level last season and even made his bow at the Theatre of Dreams during an FA Youth Cup victory over Derby County. His campaign was unfortunately cut short, however, by a foot injury that ruled him out of United's FA Youth Cup final loss to Manchester City.
