Carragher Blasts Tuchel Over England World Cup Loss, Criticizes Pickford
Carragher Blasts Tuchel Over England World Cup Loss

Jamie Carragher has launched a scathing attack on Thomas Tuchel's decision-making following England's heartbreaking 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, while also pointing the finger at goalkeeper Jordan Pickford for his role in the loss.

The Three Lions fell to their South American rivals on Wednesday evening in Atlanta, Georgia, extending 60 years of major tournament heartbreak. After a cagey first half, England took the lead in the 55th minute through Anthony Gordon, who poked home from close range after being found unmarked at the back post by Morgan Rogers.

However, the game shifted dramatically when Tuchel decided to defend the lead, withdrawing Gordon for Ezri Konsa, and later replacing Reece James and Declan Rice with Dan Burn and Nico O'Reilly. The message was clear: park the bus and protect the lead.

Defensive Shift Backfires

Those changes proved costly when Enzo Fernandez equalised from range with five minutes remaining, thundering the ball past Pickford. Argentina had been allowed to fire at will, with Alexis Mac Allister hitting the post moments earlier. Carragher, writing in The Telegraph, insisted Tuchel's substitutions and formation shift were 'the biggest factor in the latest demoralising' defeat.

"As the game evolved heading towards its climax, it was obvious Tuchel had to act. Argentina were piling on the pressure without creating too many chances," Carragher wrote. "The changes should have focused on personnel. The team's set-up did not demand such radical attention. Once England went to five at the back, it backfired. The incessant shift towards Jordan Pickford's goal became too much."

Possession Plummeted

Carragher highlighted that between England taking the lead and Argentina equalising, England had just 12 per cent possession. "You cannot go into survival mode that early and expect the odds to be in your favour. Going so defensive prematurely had dire consequences," he added.

On Fernandez's goal, Carragher was critical of Pickford, stating: "Pickford should still have saved Enzo Fernández's shot," despite the goalkeeper having an otherwise impressive game, including a point-blank save to deny Nicolas Gonzalez moments earlier.

Late Heartbreak

Lautaro Martinez sealed the win for Argentina two minutes into stoppage time with a towering header at the back post, sparking jubilation among Argentine players and fans while leaving English hearts broken. England will now face France in the third-place play-off on Saturday, July 18, while Argentina takes on Spain in the World Cup final on Sunday, July 19.
