The 37-year-old boxer Bilal Fawaz has endured a challenging journey to reach the pinnacle of the sport, but he is now poised to make significant strides in his career and secure a better future for his family. From Trauma to Triumph: Fawaz's Difficult Path
Born in Nigeria with Lebanese heritage, Fawaz faced bullying from a young age. His life took a tragic turn when his mother was murdered during religious riots, leading him to be sent to live with an uncle in Lagos. At 14, he moved to England to reunite with his father, but his hardships continued. Placed with a Nigerian family in London, he suffered abuse, captivity, and violence, including being stabbed over 20 times and shot in the leg during his teenage years.
His legal struggles were equally daunting, as he fought for over 15 years to remain in the UK. Both the UK and Nigeria denied his citizenship claims, leaving him stateless and facing multiple deportations. Six years ago, he finally gained the right to stay and work in the UK, a pivotal moment that allowed him to focus on his boxing career.
Signing with Matchroom: A Dream Realised
Fawaz found solace and purpose in boxing after escaping abuse and modern slavery. His dedication paid off when he signed a lucrative deal with Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing, a moment he describes as "being accepted into a school that only the elites get accepted to be in." In an emotional viral video, he was seen fighting back tears while shaking hands with Hearn, highlighting the significance of this achievement.
He credits Matchroom for "saving his life" and sees this opportunity as a chance to inspire others. "If I can do it at this age of 37, well, no one should have an excuse," Fawaz stated, emphasising that his story proves even an underdog or refugee can reach elite levels with determination.
Focus on Financial Stability and Family
Unlike many fighters his age who are considering retirement, Fawaz is just getting started. His primary goal is achieving financial stability to provide for his family. "What I'm striving to achieve is financial stability. That's what drives me," he explained, noting that he feels a sense of urgency to capitalise on his current momentum.
He draws inspiration from top fighters like Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury, believing that with proper care and focus, he can have a long-lasting career. Fawaz refuses to be distracted by the glamour of the sport, instead maintaining a calm and composed approach. He has even expressed a desire to be cordial with his opponent, Ishmael Davis, after their fight, saying, "I would love to take him out for dinner... but at the moment, he's in my way."
Upcoming Fight and Future Aspirations
Tonight, Fawaz will challenge Davis for the British and Commonwealth junior middleweight titles on the undercard of Josh Warrington vs Leigh Wood. A victory could transform his life, allowing him to buy a house and focus solely on boxing without the need for side jobs like Uber driving or personal training.
"After this fight, life opens," Fawaz said, hoping to secure a stable home for his family and dedicate himself entirely to the sport. His journey from adversity to opportunity serves as a powerful reminder of the human spirit's capacity to overcome and succeed.
