Commonwealth Games 2026: Ward gymnastics gold, Chanu weightlifting win

Scotland's Reuben Ward won gold in the men's all-around gymnastics final on day three of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Competing in his first Commonwealth Games, Ward scored 79.650 to finish ahead of Canada's Felix Dolci (79.450) and Australia's Jesse Moore (79.000).

Ward's historic gold

Ward led after the final rotation, scoring 12.700 on the floor exercise to secure the win. “I knew I could do it, but to actually do it is a whole different story,” he said. “Trying to hold my nerve on the high bar was a really tough task. … This is a joint win.” He became the first man to win Commonwealth gold for Scotland in the all-around.

Weightlifting records

India's Mirabai Chanu won gold in the women's 48kg weightlifting, setting a Games record in the snatch (85kg) and clean & jerk (105kg). Ruth Nyong of Nigeria took silver (168kg total) and Irene James Henry of Malaysia bronze (167kg).

Netball: Australia dominate England

Australia defeated England 66-48 in Pool A of the netball. The defending champion Diamonds were “quicker, sharper and more clinical from the opening whistle”, according to a report.

Ramsay-Peaty looks ahead

Adam Ramsay-Peaty, after his shock defeat in the 100m breaststroke final, returned for the 50m breaststroke preliminaries. He said the decision to continue to the 2028 Olympics will be “the hardest climb I have ever faced”.

Boxing: Idi Amin's grandson

Aziz Abdul, grandson of former Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, vowed to become the “new king of Scotland” ahead of his super-heavyweight bout against England's Damar Thomas. Amin, a former boxer, once declared himself king of Scotland.

Other action

Malawi beat Northern Ireland 66-48 in netball. In weightlifting, Malaysia's Bin Kasdan Mohamad Aniq won gold in the men's 60kg category. South Africa led Tonga in netball at half-time. The men's mile race and the women's all-around gymnastics final were among the evening events.
