Context of the energy price cap rise
The offers come ahead of the upcoming October energy price cap rise. Ofgem announced a 4% increase in the energy price cap back in August, with the rise taking effect this week. From Thursday, October 1, the typical household bills will rise to £1,723 a year, a three-year high. Ofgem said the price cap will rise by £60 per year, or £5 per month, for the average household using both electricity and gas if this level were sustained for a year. Ofgem blamed the war in the Middle East and the increased wholesale gas price as major factors in the increase. As a result, some households have been busy making their homes more energy efficient to prepare for the increase in their bills. However, some UK households could benefit from gift cards and spending money before Christmas, helping take the sting out of the increased bills.
