Nigel Farage announced his resignation as Member of Parliament for Clacton-on-Sea on Tuesday afternoon (July 7, 2026), triggering a by-election in which he intends to stand. The Reform UK leader stepped down amid intense scrutiny over financial support from convicted fraudster George Cottrell and a previous £5 million gift from a Reform UK donor.
Resignation Triggered by Financial Scrutiny
Farage has been under pressure following reports that long-term ally George Cottrell provided funding for security and staffing in the year before he was elected. Labour had asked the Electoral Commission to investigate whether the support should have been declared, questioning whether Cottrell—based in Montenegro—was a permissible donor on the UK electoral register. Farage was also facing a parliamentary investigation over a £5 million gift from Reform donor Christopher Harborne before becoming an MP.
In a video statement released shortly after 2pm on Tuesday, Farage accused the media of harassment and vowed to fight a “people versus the establishment” by-election. He claimed standards investigations by parliamentary authorities are “now being used as a political tool.”
By-Election Process and Timeline
The by-election will take place in the constituency of Clacton-on-Sea, just two years after the 2024 general election when Farage won the seat. To initiate the election, Reform Chief Whip Lee Anderson must formally move the writ in the House of Commons. Once the writ is moved, the by-election must occur between 21 and 27 working days later, typically on a Thursday.
If the writ is issued in the coming days, the earliest possible date for the by-election is August 6, 2026. It could also take place on subsequent Thursdays, such as August 13.
Chancellor's Response and Political Reactions
Chancellor Rachel Reeves said she would agree to Farage's request to quit as an MP so he can “spend the summer arguing with a bin.” Technically, MPs cannot resign; they must be appointed to either the steward and bailiff of the Chiltern Hundreds or the Manor of Northstead, symbolic roles that bar them from the Commons. Reeves stated: “I will accept Nigel Farage’s request to be appointed Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead. It is a farce and a desperate distraction, and the people of Clacton deserve better. But if he wants to spend the summer arguing with a bin, I won’t stop him.”
The Liberal Democrats had called on Reeves to block the process, arguing Farage should not be allowed to quit until a parliamentary investigation into undeclared donations had concluded.
Potential By-Election Dates
The Clacton by-election could take place as early as August 6, 2026, or on any of the following Thursdays, including August 13, depending on when the writ is moved.
