Trump Supporter Disrupts Democrats' 'People's State of the Union' Event
A supporter of former President Donald Trump dramatically rushed the stage during the Democratic Party's organised boycott of the official State of the Union address on Tuesday night. The incident occurred as top Democrats gathered on the National Mall in Washington DC for their alternative event, dubbed the 'People's State of the Union.'
Counter-Programming and a Chaotic Interruption
The Democratic gathering, hosted by groups including MeidasTouch and MoveOn Civic Action, featured victims of Jeffrey Epstein, families impacted by immigration raids, dismissed public health workers, and Americans facing rising living costs. This was staged as a direct contrast to President Trump's speech to the joint session of Congress.
However, the event was abruptly disrupted when Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy was speaking. An unidentified man in a green hoodie and white baseball cap rushed onto the stage, shouting pro-Trump slogans.
'I snuck in the border,' the protester joked, before adding, 'Go Trump, go Trump.' He was swiftly and forcibly removed from the stage by police officers. Capitol Police later confirmed to the Daily Mail that the demonstrator was arrested without any further incident.
Murphy's Fiery Speech and Political Context
The interruption came moments after Senator Murphy had launched a scathing critique of President Trump, accusing him of 'making a mockery of this institution' and declaring that Trump 'doesn't deserve an audience.' Murphy explained his absence from the official State of the Union, stating, 'I'm not at the State of the Union because these are not normal times and Democrats have to stop behaving normally.'
He further criticised the anticipated content of Trump's address, predicting it would consist of 'lie after lie, attack after attack, grandstanding.' Murphy asserted, 'The true state of the union is this... This union is in crisis.' His speech then escalated as he labelled Trump a 'despot' and condemned the administration's immigration policies.
'ICE is out of control,' Murphy said of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, vowing that 'not one more dime' would be allocated to the Department of Homeland Security—which was partially shut down amid funding debates—'until they follow the laws of the country.'
Broader Democratic Boycott and Alternative Events
The 'People's State of the Union' was just one of several counter-protests organised by Democrats. Another event, titled 'State of the Swamp,' was held at the National Press Club, where lawmakers and media personalities were scheduled to speak, and attendees were encouraged to wear swamp-themed frog costumes.
Progressive figures in attendance included the mayors of Minneapolis and Chicago, Democrats Jacob Frey and Brandon Johnson, who have repeatedly clashed with Trump over immigration enforcement. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries had previously presented his caucus with two options: attend Trump's speech with 'silent defiance' or participate in alternative programming.
Democrats also orchestrated at least three formal rebuttals to Trump's address:
- Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger delivered the official Democratic rebuttal.
- Congresswoman Summer Lee provided the progressive response.
- California Senator Alex Padilla gave the Spanish-language response, a role following his own controversial removal from a Department of Homeland Security press conference the previous summer.
The stage-rushing incident underscores the deep political divisions and heightened tensions surrounding the State of the Union, transforming the traditional presidential address into a focal point for protest and counter-narrative from the opposition party.
