Former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has shared a photo of himself on crutches after sustaining an injury while skiing during the Easter holidays. The incident occurred while he was reportedly 'showing off' to his daughters, Krishna and Anoushka, during a family trip.
Social Media Update from the MP
Now serving as the Member of Parliament for Richmond and Northallerton, Sunak took to Facebook to update constituents about his condition. He wrote: 'Pushed my luck on the slopes this Easter showing off to my daughters.' In his post, he reassured the public that the apparently minor injury would not interfere with his parliamentary duties.
'I’m already on the mend and determined to keep up with my meetings and constituency work,' Sunak stated, adding with a touch of humor, 'although sadly no walks with Nova for a while.' He expressed gratitude to those who had reached out and looked forward to returning to full fitness soon.
Family Details and Previous Incidents
Sunak's daughters, Krishna, 15, and Anoushka, 13, are largely kept away from the public eye. This is not the first time the former PM and his children have encountered mishaps with winter sports. In January 2022, Sunak was pictured falling on top of Krishna while ice skating at the Natural History Museum, in what was described as an embarrassing moment.
An onlooker named Maddie, a communications officer from London, recalled the incident: 'He was skating for ten minutes before he staggered and dragged her down.' She noted that after recovering, Sunak took selfies with shocked onlookers, demonstrating his resilience.
Wealth and Background of the Sunak Family
Rishi Sunak and his wife, Akshata Murty, 45, were the wealthiest couple to ever reside at 10 Downing Street. According to the Sunday Times Rich List as of May 2024, their combined net worth stands at approximately £651 million, surpassing King Charles' fortune of around £640 million.
Murty, a businesswoman and fashion designer, is the daughter of Indian billionaire N. R. Narayana Murthy, often described as the father of the Indian IT sector. Murthy, 79, is worth approximately $4.1 billion (£3.1 billion) after co-founding Infosys, a global IT giant. The majority of the Sunak family's wealth is attributed to Murty's 0.94 percent stake in Infosys.
Sunak himself comes from a different background; he is the son of a GP father and pharmacist mother who emigrated from East Africa to Southampton in the 1960s. He studied at Oxford University and later won a Fulbright scholarship to Stanford University, where he met his future wife.
Recent Activities and Return to Work
It is not known where the Sunak family had been skiing, but the former PM has since returned from his holiday. In his Facebook post, he added lightheartedly, 'Thankfully there’s no shortage of sport on TV this month!' indicating he plans to stay active in other ways during his recovery.
Recently, Sunak became 'emotional' when joining celebrations marking the Coast to Coast Walk's new status as one of the UK's National Trails, showing his continued engagement with public events despite the injury.
