Starmer: Middle East Conflict May Hit UK as Hard as Covid and Brexit
Starmer: Middle East conflict could be as severe as Covid

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has warned that the impact of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East on the United Kingdom could be as severe as that of Brexit, the Covid-19 pandemic, and the war in Ukraine. Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme, Mr Starmer cautioned the public that the crisis could “define a generation” and urged them not to anticipate a return to normalcy once the Strait of Hormuz reopens.

Starmer’s Warning on Economic Shocks

Mr Starmer emphasised that the repercussions of the conflict would be felt long after hostilities cease. He stated: “I don't want anybody to think that once the Strait of Hormuz is open, it all returns to normal. It won't be like that. There's then the war in Ukraine and all the indicators are that the world is going to get more volatile, not less volatile.”

The Prime Minister argued that previous crises, such as the 2008 financial crash and Brexit, were met with a desire to revert to the status quo, which he described as a flawed approach that left the economy “flatlining” for nearly two decades. He insisted that a different course is now necessary to build a stronger, fairer Britain capable of withstanding global shocks.

Closer EU Ties as a Solution

Mr Starmer advocated for closer ties with the European Union as a means to protect the UK from further financial instability. He said: “In that context, you have to look at Europe and ask itself, is Europe strong enough? I don't think we are. But then the response then has to be not the status quo… but a changed Britain, a stronger Britain and a fairer Britain.”

He highlighted recent progress, including falling inflation and six consecutive interest rate cuts, alongside positive growth figures. However, he noted that these gains have been overshadowed by worse forecasts following the Middle East conflict.

A Defining Moment for the Generation

The Prime Minister concluded: “There are moments in history that will define a generation, and I think we're in one of those moments. I'm not going to drag the United Kingdom into a war, it's not in our national interest, but it is impacting us. It's impacting our economy, it's impacting what happens on our streets.”

Mr Starmer’s remarks come amid rising tensions in the region, with U.S. President Donald Trump’s involvement leading to skyrocketing prices. The Prime Minister’s call for a fundamental shift in economic strategy underscores the gravity of the situation as the UK navigates these turbulent times.
