David Bowie Unveils New Video Featuring Puppet Replica of His 1980 Alter-Ego

David Bowie has premiered a new music video for his single Love Is Lost, featuring a puppet dressed as a harlequin clown that is an exact replica of the costume he wore in his 1980 video for Ashes To Ashes. The video was shown at the Barclaycard Mercury Music Prize ceremony, where Bowie was nominated for the award.

Shot in his New York offices a week before the ceremony, Bowie conceived the idea himself and filmed the video on his own camera over a weekend. He was assisted by his assistant Jimmy King and best friend Coco Schwab, with the only cost being a $12.99 USB flash drive to download the finished video.

The video uses puppets from Bowie's archive, rather than celebrity faces like Gary Oldman, Marion Cotillard, and Tilda Swinton, who have appeared in his recent offerings. The single Love Is Lost is the next track from his album The Next Day, and the video features the edited James Murphy mix of the song.

Despite the video's premiere, Bowie did not win the Mercury Prize. The award went to James Blake for his second album Overgrown, beating other nominees including Laura Mvula, Rudimental, Arctic Monkeys, and Foals.
