Pep Guardiola Agreed England Job in 2024 Before U-Turn as Tuchel Faces Exit
Pep Guardiola Agreed England Job in 2024 Before U-Turn

Pep Guardiola had verbally agreed to take the England job in 2024 before performing a dramatic U-turn, according to reports. The revelation comes as current Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel faces mounting pressure following England's World Cup semi-final exit at the hands of Argentina.

Guardiola's Previous Agreement with the FA

The former Barcelona and Manchester City manager reportedly agreed to succeed Gareth Southgate after talks with Football Association chiefs in 2024. However, Guardiola changed his mind and decided to remain at Manchester City for a further two seasons, as reported by The Athletic.

Guardiola is now unattached after leaving City following a decade of unprecedented success. He has publicly stated his intention to take a break from football. Speaking after his City exit was confirmed, Guardiola said: "Rest. No plans to train for a while. Otherwise I would be here. I need to step back, I will not train for a while."

He added: "It's not 10 years – except half a year in New York, it has been 17 or 18 years every three days with people demanding trebles and Premier Leagues and I need to breathe a little bit and relax. I will be out for a while."

Tuchel Under Pressure After World Cup Exit

Thomas Tuchel's position as England manager is under scrutiny after the team's 2-1 semi-final defeat to Argentina in Atlanta. The German's second-half tactics were widely criticised, with many questioning his future despite signing a new contract with the FA in February.

England's World Cup run ended in the semi-finals, matching their performance under Gareth Southgate in 2018. However, expectations were higher given the squad's quality and Tuchel's pedigree as a Champions League-winning manager.

Contract Clause Complicates Dismissal

The FA may find it difficult to part ways with Tuchel due to a clause in his contract. Reports indicate that a break clause existed allowing either party to terminate the agreement if England exited before the World Cup quarter-finals. Since the Three Lions reached the semi-finals, any severance would require mutual agreement.

Tuchel's current deal runs until the end of the 2028 European Championships. Speaking after the Argentina defeat, Tuchel said: "We keep on going with the contract until the home Euros. I'm looking forward to that even though right now it's difficult to look that far ahead."

Guardiola's Future Remains Uncertain

Despite being linked with the England role once more, Guardiola's comments suggest he is not ready to return to management. He emphasised his need for rest after nearly two decades of continuous coaching at the highest level.

Guardiola's record at Manchester City includes six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and the club's first Champions League triumph in 2023. His availability would make him a prime candidate for any top international or club job, but his desire for a sabbatical may delay any appointment.
