Mayor Zohran Mamdani faced intense questioning from reporters on Friday regarding his wife's social media activity, specifically her apparent endorsement of controversial Instagram posts related to the October 7 attack on Israel. The Democratic socialist leader described his spouse as a private individual who maintains no formal role in his political operations.
Social Media Scrutiny Emerges
A story published by Jewish Insider brought attention to the online behavior of Rama Duwaji, the 28-year-old wife of Mayor Mamdani. According to the investigative outlet, Duwaji had liked an Instagram post from leftist organization The Slow Factory that celebrated the Hamas-led assault on Israel in October 2023.
The contentious post featured images of individuals who had seized control of an Israeli Defense Forces vehicle, with the phrase 'Free Palestine' prominently displayed across it. Another component of the post declared 'Breaking the walls of apartheid and military occupation' alongside the date of the attack, accompanied by a photograph of a bulldozer used by militants to breach Israeli borders during the assault that resulted in nearly 1,200 fatalities.
Mayor's Firm Response
When confronted about these revelations, Mayor Mamdani offered a carefully worded defense of his partner. 'My wife is the love of my life, and she is also a private person who has held no formal position on my campaign or in my City Hall,' the mayor stated unequivocally to gathered journalists.
However, this characterization of Duwaji as intensely private appears somewhat contradictory to her public profile. She recently graced the cover of The Cut magazine, a prestigious fashion publication that operates as an offshoot of the widely-read New York magazine, suggesting a comfort with public visibility.
Additional Controversial Engagements
Further investigation by Jewish Insider revealed additional social media engagements that raised eyebrows. Duwaji had also liked a post from the left-wing collective People's Forum that called for organized protests against Israel. A subsequent post from the day after such demonstrations declared 'FROM THE RIVER TO THE SEA, PALESTINE WILL BE FREE!' while celebrating thousands of New Yorkers who took to the streets to support Palestinian resistance and demand an end to American aid to Israel.
Interestingly, after the Jewish Insider article became public, Duwaji's Instagram account no longer showed these likes, suggesting the engagements had been removed or retracted.
Official Clarification and Past Controversies
A spokesperson for Mayor Mamdani provided clarification to the media outlet, stating: 'Mayor Mamdani has been clear and consistent: Hamas is a terrorist organization, October 7th was a horrific war crime, and he has condemned that violence unequivocally.'
This incident represents just the latest in a series of controversies surrounding the mayor's stance on Middle Eastern politics. Mamdani has previously faced criticism for using phrases perceived as anti-Israel, including the expression 'globalize the intifada.' As New York City's first Muslim mayor, his ardent support for the Palestinian cause has generated skepticism among some segments of the Jewish community in the metropolis.
Political Background and Vision
Mayor Mamdani, who was born in Uganda, has championed progressive policies since taking office, including proposals for free daycare services and free public transportation across the city. He has also advocated for implementing a millionaire tax, though critics warn such measures might drive wealthy residents from New York, potentially undermining tax revenues that fund essential public services.
During his inauguration ceremony, Mamdani made his political orientation unmistakably clear. 'I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as a democratic socialist,' he declared. 'The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today, we will govern expansively and audaciously.'
The mayor further boasted about 'toppling a political dynasty' and delivered a blistering critique of former President Donald Trump, who has labeled Mamdani a 'communist.' 'If any city can show a nation how to stop Donald Trump, it is the city that gave rise to him,' Mamdani asserted during his inaugural address.
Despite this adversarial rhetoric, Mamdani first met with President Trump in the Oval Office in November 2025, where the Republican leader reportedly offered praise for the emerging star of the Democratic party, creating an intriguing political dynamic between the two figures.
