White House Press Secretary's Iran War Poll Claims Debunked by Community Note
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has been subjected to significant online criticism and a formal Community Note on the social media platform X, following her controversial assertion that the American public broadly supports the ongoing war in Iran. The incident unfolded after Leavitt posted a statement on Thursday claiming, "Americans Agree that Operation Epic Fury Is an Overwhelming Success," accompanied by a link to White House polling data.
Selective Data and Widespread Backlash
The core issue, as highlighted by the Community Note attached to her post, is that the referenced polls exclusively surveyed MAGA Republicans or Republican voters, deliberately excluding Democrats and Independents. This methodological flaw significantly skews the results, presenting a distorted view of national sentiment. "The White House’s polls mentioned in the link only refer to MAGA Republicans or Republicans being in favor of the war, not the broader American public," the Community Note explicitly stated, accusing the post of misrepresenting America's collective viewpoint.
Prominent journalist Medhi Hasan was among the critics, lambasting Leavitt on X. "She is linking to an article showing only MAGA Republicans support the war, and then claiming ‘Americans agree’ with it. Her own link shows her to be a liar," Hasan wrote, urging reporters to treat her claims with appropriate skepticism.
Conservative Voices Join the Criticism
Interestingly, the backlash was not confined to liberal or independent commentators. Several conservative accounts with substantial followings expressed vehement disapproval. A user known as The Patriot Voice, a conservative political account boasting over 185,000 followers, replied in all caps: "NO THE HELL WE DO NOT. STOP GASLIGHTING US!" This sentiment was echoed by another right-wing account, ConservativeG99, who questioned the efficacy of such tactics, stating, "Gaslighting and propaganda don't work anymore, lady. Absolute insanity."
Adding factual weight to the criticism, journalist Glenn Greenwald shared a counter-poll conducted by Reuters-Ipsos. This independent survey revealed that nearly 60 percent of Americans disapprove of the Iran war, starkly contradicting the White House's narrative of overwhelming public support.
Leavitt's Unwavering Defense
Despite the mounting evidence and vocal opposition, Leavitt remained defiant. On Friday, she doubled down by sharing a separate Politico poll indicating strong support for the war among MAGA Trump supporters. "As I've said repeatedly, Americans trust President Trump as their Commander-in-Chief and support his efforts to eliminate terrorist threats and keep us safe," Leavitt asserted. She further dismissed media narratives, claiming, "There is no 'MAGA fracturing,' no matter how many times the media tries to claim otherwise."
The episode underscores a deepening political divide regarding the Iran conflict and raises serious questions about the use of selective polling data to shape public perception. While the White House continues to frame the war as a widely endorsed success, independent data and a chorus of critics from across the political spectrum suggest a far more complex and divided national reality.
