Pep Guardiola reached a verbal agreement with the Football Association to become England manager in 2024, only to have a change of heart and remain at Manchester City for two more seasons, according to reports.
Guardiola's near-departure from Manchester City
The Spanish tactician, who left Manchester City this summer after a trophy-laden 10-year tenure, was on the verge of succeeding Gareth Southgate following England's 2-1 loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. The Athletic reported that Guardiola had even agreed personal terms with the FA before deciding to stay at the Etihad Stadium.
During his extended stay, Guardiola led City to six Premier League titles, 11 domestic trophies, and a Champions League title before departing in 2026.
Thomas Tuchel's tenure under scrutiny
With Guardiola opting to remain at City, the FA appointed Thomas Tuchel as England manager. The German guided England unbeaten through World Cup qualification, conceding no goals. However, England crashed out of the 2026 World Cup in the semi-finals after a 2-1 loss to Argentina, sparking speculation over Tuchel's future.
The MEN understands that Guardiola's initial agreement with the FA was a significant development, but his decision to stay at City ultimately paved the way for Tuchel's appointment.
