Former Biden Staffer Condemns Democrat-Run Cities Following Chaotic DC Teen Takeover

A former Biden White House staffer has issued a sharp rebuke to Democrat-run cities in the wake of a chaotic and violent "juvenile takeover" that erupted in Washington DC's upscale Navy Yard neighbourhood. Yemisi Egbewole, who served as chief of staff to Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, publicly denounced the incident after scores of teenagers were seen running through the streets, screaming and fighting on Saturday night.

Arrests and Firearms Recovered in Navy Yard Mayhem

According to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), two teenagers were arrested during the mayhem, and authorities successfully recovered two firearms. The disturbance unfolded despite an 11pm curfew that had been established earlier in the month, specifically prohibiting teenagers under 18 from gathering in groups of nine or more in areas including the U Street Corridor and Navy Yard, unless engaged in exempted activities.

This curfew was adopted under the Juvenile Curfew Second Emergency Act, passed late last year following similar takeovers in the city. The legislation grants the MPD chief authority to establish curfew zones "in an area where large groups of youths are gathering or intend to gather in a manner that poses a risk of substantial harm to public safety."

Egbewole's Blunt Criticism on Social Media

"Blue cities need to wake up," Egbewole posted to X on Sunday, sharing a video of the melee. "Tolerating this behavior is unfair to the residents who live here and unfair to the kids themselves." She elaborated further in a follow-up post, highlighting the impact on local residents.

"Imagine paying $3,500 a month to live in a box in the city, working all week to afford it and when the weekend comes, you can't even enjoy it because kids are bare-knuckle beating each other outside your window," Egbewole wrote. "The city you pay taxes to does nothing. Incredible."

Escalating Violence Despite Curfew Measures

The curfew apparently failed to deter large groups of teenagers from gathering. According to the MPD, around 6:30pm on Saturday, hordes of teenagers assembled in a park at Navy Yard, with the group swelling to roughly 200 by 8:30pm. The situation quickly escalated with multiple incidents reported.

  • At 9:15pm, officers received a report of a robbery where a group of teenagers allegedly robbed another teen on First Street SE, taking the victim's shoes and jacket. The victim was not injured, but assailants remain at large.
  • By 9:30pm, videos posted online showed dozens of teenagers fighting near First and M Streets SE, with National Guard members visible nearby as crowds swarmed the intersection.
  • Roughly 15 minutes later, a teenager shot a gun into the air inside the park. A National Guard member apprehended the teen, and MPD officers recovered the weapon. The 15-year-old boy faces charges including unlawful discharge of a firearm and carrying a pistol without a license.
  • Around 10pm, a group of teens jumped and robbed two others near New Jersey Avenue and M Street, with victims later hospitalising themselves for treatment.
  • At 10:34pm, US Secret Service members conducted a traffic stop after spotting a suspect matching a description getting into a rideshare vehicle. The suspect attempted to discard a gun, but police recovered the weapon and arrested the 16-year-old for carrying a pistol without a license.

Police Response and Ongoing Concerns

The crowd finally dissipated by 11pm due to the curfew, which remains in place until April 15, though one teenager was arrested just before 11:30pm for violating it. Interim Police Chief Jeffrey W Carroll stated, "The behavior displayed last night in Navy Yard cannot be tolerated and we are very thankful that no one was seriously injured."

He commended officers and partners for their professionalism in safely recovering two firearms and advised that police "need parents and guardians to be proactive and know where their children are and who they are with at all times." Egbewole echoed this sentiment, emphasising the need for cities to "enforce consequences" to prevent such incidents, as shared footage of the takeover circulated widely.
