The United States suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the World Cup round of 16, prompting global mockery after President Donald Trump's controversial intervention over a player's red card. The Belgium national team taunted the US by posting a photo of striker Romelu Lukaku cupping his ear with the caption "overturn this," referencing Trump's request to FIFA to overturn Folarin Balogun's suspension.
Trump's Interference Backfires
Trump admitted he lobbied FIFA president Gianni Infantino to review Balogun's red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina, saying he "didn't think it was a foul." Despite World Cup rules prohibiting appeals for red cards, FIFA invoked the previously unused Article 27 clause to overturn the suspension, allowing Balogun to start against Belgium. The US striker, 25, could not prevent the 4-1 rout, with Belgium's players mocking Trump's signature dance moves after scoring the fourth goal.
Global Mockery Ensues
Social media erupted with ridicule. One British fan referenced US star Christian Pulisic's Trump dance celebration in a previous match, writing: "Dance now, Pulisic." An Iranian FA spokesperson said: "Now the whole world is dancing to celebrate politics' humiliating defeat by football." Another fan shared a photo of Lukaku cupping his ears in front of despondent US fans, calling it "the most beautiful sight." British researcher Zoe Gardiner commented: "Going out 4-1 after cheating and the whole country defending it on here. True MAGA levels of self humiliation."
Americans Join the Criticism
Even US citizens mocked the defeat. One wrote: "Haven't seen America this thoroughly embarrassed on the world stage since we lost that war we started with Iran like 3 weeks ago." Others criticized Trump for his jinxing presence, noting his incorrect predictions for the Kansas City Chiefs, New York Knicks, and Europe in the Ryder Cup.
Belgium Coach Praises Balogun
Belgium head coach Rudi Garcia revealed that Balogun approached him after the match. "I really liked that. It's not his fault, he's not the one to blame and that's what I told him," Garcia told reporters. Belgium advance to face Spain in the quarter-finals in Los Angeles on Friday.
