The Sunrise Movement, a youth-led climate justice organisation known for advocating a Green New Deal, has taken credit for disrupting Donald Trump's rally in New York state on Friday. A spokesperson confirmed to the Guardian that the activists arrested were members of the group.
Video posted on social media showed two activists protesting during Trump's speech at Rockland Community College. The first activist stood on a chair and shouted: 'Donald Trump you're separating families! Immigrants are under attack, how do you sleep at night?' He was pulled off by a police officer after asking about ICE camps.
Minutes later, a second activist held a sign reading 'Trump is a war criminal' and shouted: 'You should be ashamed of yourself! How dare you take our money and send it to Iran to kill children! How dare you send it to Gaza to engage in a genocide!' The crowd responded with loud boos.
The protests targeted Trump's mass deportation campaign and his administration's military actions in Iran. The Sunrise Movement has been a prominent voice in climate activism but also engages in broader social justice issues.
