ITV has confirmed that the Second World War drama Home Fires will not return for a third series, leaving viewers on a dramatic cliffhanger. The show, which starred Samantha Bond and Francesca Annis, followed the women of the Great Paxford Women's Institute as they supported their community during the war.
An ITV spokesman said: 'We are incredibly proud of what Home Fires has achieved, but the ITV commissioning team continues to refresh the channel's drama portfolio, hence the decision not to commission a further new series.' The second series concluded on Sunday evening with a fighter plane crashing into a village home, the fate of its inhabitants left unknown.
The finale drew a consolidated audience of 4.27 million, clashing with the Bafta TV Awards. Actor Daniel Ryan, who played plumber Bryn Brindsley, first broke the cancellation news on Twitter, revealing that at least half of a third series had been written and all storylines mapped out.
